HISTORY OF THE SPRYFIELD LIONS CLUB

On April 16 1957, the Spryfield Lions Club began to serve the community of Spryfield with 25 charter members. Club sponsor was the Halifax Lions Club.

The Club has sponsored many major projects such as Kidston Lake Park in 1969. Following the completion of the Kidston lake park the lions club proposed building an indoor skating rink.Under the direction of Lion Frank "Wee" Martin, the full support of all the lions member, and land donated by Randell Park Developments , the first sod was turned in April 1972. for the first year, stands from the Halifax commons were used, a PA system was salvaged from MT&T and ice was cleaned by hand - then flooded with a 45 gallon barrel.On November 29 1997 while celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Spryfield Lions Rink, the Rink was dedicated to the late Lion Frank"Wee" Martin and renamed the Frank "Wee" Martin Memorial Rink.

The Lions Den opened in 1987,Recreation Center in 1979/80, and the lions Wave pool in 1985, all of which where owned and operated by the Spryfield Lions Club.In 1998 the Lions Club donated the wave pool to the City of Halifax; years later the Spryfield Lions Rink and Recreation Center were Eventually turned over the the City of Halifax as well.

July 2007, members of the Spryfield Lions Club in conjunction with the Boys and Girls Club,United Way, workers from Home Depot and members of the community built a playground in one day, on land owned by the Spryfield Lions Club opposite the Lions Rink on Drysdale Road.

Every year the Spryfield Lion Club provide support to those in need through out the community. The Spryfield Lion along side the Spryfield Lioness hosted Christmas dinner for the Post-Mentally Challenged. Over the past number of years the Club Hosts a Bowling Tournament each year with the proceeds going to the Boys and Girls Club of Spryfield.

The Club sponsors Minor Hockey and Ball. On a yearly basis The Club donate Bursaries to a local high schools. As well every Canada Day and Natal the Spryfield Lions Club provide a free Pancake Breakfast to the community.

Over the years the Spryfield Lions Club members have taken on positions within the Lions movement: Lion Doug Adams was elected District Governor 1983-84; Late Lion Clyde Chambers held the position of Cabinet Treasurer 1964-65; Lion Doug Adams held the position of Cabinet Treasurer 1987-88. Over the years : Hubbards in 1972, Timberlea in 1982, and Prospect Road in 1985; in 1980 the Spryfield Lioness were created.

Spryfield Lions members put in many hours creating a strong and developed community of Spryfield; and will continue to preform community events and services throughout the years to come for Spryfield.
